Proofreading

By David Allen, 7th, September 2011

I am in the process of reading Humboldt's Political Essay on the Kingdom of New Spain, which I downloaded from the Humboldt Digital Library.  I have noticed a large number of errors in the text, which almost always take the form of inappropriate words substituted for other words with a similar spelling.  It looks like the software  used to create the files ran the text through a spelling checker, but that no human examined the text to make sure that all those correctly spelled words are the right words!  This is annoying and sometimes can be quite confusing, since it is not always apparent what is the true meaning of the text

Suggest you implement a process for readers or volunteers to correct these errors.  Project Gutenberg has a procedure, which might serve as a model.

Dear David Allen, you are absolutely right and thank you very much for your note. We will work on this as a new part of our project. Please take under consideration, that we don't have any relevant financial funding to develop the HDL. So the HDl just is a prototyp of a digital library, which we are using to create a new approach of online research platforms. We are curious to know more about your suggested solution.
